Stirling Psychoanalysis, Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy, Counselling, NLP, CBT, Mindfulness
Stuart will be available for clinic at the One Allan Road Clinic in central Stirling from May 2014.
Therapies provided include psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, CBT, NLP and mindfulness. Individual and couples counselling are available.
Who will be providing psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, CBT and counselling?
Stuart trained from 1993 to 1996 in psychoanalysis, stress counselling and clinical hypnotherapy. His diploma was awarded by ASM, a CNHC hypnotherapy regulation route (via SSM). He was assessed on over 200 clients (over 1,000 client hours) and NVQ external assessment was an integral part of the training standards.
Since graduation Stuart has trained in a variety of other psychotherapy models as continuous professional development, including CBT, NLP, Life coaching and variety of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. He is also a keen practitioner of eastern psychology including mindfulness. He has underpinned his further development with a MSc Psychology.
Stuart is a CNHC regulated complementary therapist (hypnotherapy) and is on the CNHC and FHT AR Schemes. Accredited Registers are maintained by the Professional Standards Agency for healthcare professionals not subject to statutory regulation.
Stuart is a Fellow of the National Council of Psychotherapists. He is also a full member of the National Association of Counsellors Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists. he is a full member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. All three of these are CNHC accreditation routes.
What styles of therapy are available in Stirling?
Stuart provides psychoanalysis, drawing in particular on Jung, Lacan and Klein. He also uses elements of other psychotherapies and counselling models including humanistic, CBT (cognitive Behavioural Therapy), mindfulness, TA, Gestalt and couples counselling. He also provides addictions counselling and grief and bereavement counselling. As a clinical hypnotherapists he provides a range of hypnotherapy models, including hypnoanalysis, trauma regression, Ericksonian, visualisation, indirect, direct and storytelling. Hypnotherapy is also combined with CBT in a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy model. NLP (neuro linguistic programming) methods are often combined where appropriate, as are life coaching and mindfulness.
What kinds of problem can psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy help with?
Therapies work in different ways. CBT and hypnotherapy can be used holistically ot to treat specific mental health conditions. For example NICE recommend CBT based psychological therapies for a range of mental health conditions, and hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel syndrome. Anxiety UK recommend CBT, counselling and hypnotherapy for a range of anxiety based issues.
Generally however psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy are not used to "treat" conditions. They instead work on the person as a whole, addressing underlying developmental and experiential problems which can contribute to emotional and mental distress. In psychoanalysis for example developmental problems and relationship based issues can lead to neurotic outcomes, which western medicine might label as mental health conditions. Both psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy can be used to address psychosomatic conditions (real problems caused by psychological origins).
CBT and coaching, combined with other psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy methods can combine well in the management and personal development of persons suffering from depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders and other mental health issues. Here NICE guidelines are to treat using CBT, and the person can then be helped along side this more holistically with talking therapies.
What is the difference between psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy?
This is a tricky question to answer. Frankly there is no real difference. Much of modern psychoanalysis, such as the work of Freud was rooted in hypnotherapy theory. Freud himself used hypnotherapy, and later free association which uses an altered state. Both psychoanalysis or psychotherapy and hypnotherapy can be seen in cultures going back to 4500BCE in China and are really two sides of the same coin. Formal hypnotherapy uses trance, informal uses in between state, conversation and story telling. Psychoanalysis uses altered states, or when combined as hypnoanalysis a hypnosis state.
There are formal types of hypnotherapy and psychoanalysis that may appear different in presentation and method (although underpinning theory is often mingled), but the two are essentially linked forms of psychological therapy or psychotherapy. An artificial divide has been insinuated by hypnotherapy being voluntarily regulated as a "complementary" therapy out of convenience. Hypnotherapy is quite obviously a psychological therapy and many therapists, including Stuart, are trained in hypnotherapy and analysis.
