Clinical Psychotherapy Psychoanalysis and counselling services in Edinburgh, Falkirk, Stirling and Glasgow.

We are complementary health practitioners, not alternative health practitioners. This means that we work WITH the medical profession. If you have an illness or injury, or if you are going to embark on a new diet, fitness plan or if you have any uninvestigated symptoms, you must consult your medical doctor.

Both therapists are professionally registered, subject to regulation, carry insurance, adhere to National Occupational Standards and Strict codes of ethics, have disclosure checks and have qualifications from QCA (Qualification Curriculum Authority) approved awarding bodies. Both complete annual CPD (continuous professional development) via both Universities and the BMJ medical CPD service (neither are medically qualified). Both have regular supervision arrangements. Both are listed on AR Accredited  Registers (Dneise: CNHC, Stuart: CNHC & FHT).

The PSA is an independent body, accountable to Parliament. The PSA was asked by the Government to set up the AR scheme in 2012, to offer enhanced protection for anyone seeking health and social care services that are not statutorily regulated.’ (PSA approved quote).

(Both Stuart and Denise are registered hypnotherapists with the CNHC, the voluntary regulator for complementary therapies set up with Government funding and support, also an AR scheme)

PSA AR FHT
(Stuart and Denise are FHT members and are listed on the AR Scheme)

Stuart began his career with training in psychoanalysis, stress counselling and hypnotherapy. His training was with ASM, recognised by SSM  which is part of the new CNHC accreditation route. NVQ assessment to Level 4 was an integral part of the training and assessment process. In 1996 he was assessed in his ability to provide analysis, hypnotherapy, stress management, stress counselling, psychotherapy, NLP and complementary health therapies including specific training and coaching provision as part of an NVQ Level 4 in Training and Development assessment. This included assessment of lecturing provision for a local education authority.

Since that time he has also trained in counselling and psychotherapy. He has also completed a variety of training courses in different models of psychology and philosophy, both eastern and western models. Eastern models include Taoist healing methods and eastern Zen & Buddhist models including Morita, Naikan and Buddhist Object Relation Theory and Mindfulness. Meditation, Qi Gong and Reiki are also employed. Stuart has also worked for Children's Services, in Youth work and in Intensive Service Support work with clients with violent behaviour. He has completed ASET level 3 or 4 awards in Life coaching, NLP, Grief counselling, Psychotherapy, Counselling, Mental Health, Hypnotherapy and Chi Gung. Stuart has a BSc business related degree, with relevance to life coaching and NLP analysis methods. He has a MSc Psychology and a BA (Open) in Psychology topics.. He is about 80% through a BA in Philosophy. He has a range of  awards with relevance to Eastern Philosophy methods.

Different Sorts of Psychological therapy, counselling, psychoanalysis or psychotherapy available in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Falkirk

There are many different sorts of psychological therapy and theory. These include:

  • Analysis: Stuart uses psychoanalytic, philisophical and logical analysis including CBASP. Denise uses cognitive behavioural style analysis.
  • Psychoanalysis. Famous styles include those of Freud, Jung, Klein and Adler. Stuart specialises in an integrative combination of Klein and Lacan with other influences.
  • Personal Development psychotherapy: Using listening skills and appropriate therapy skills to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling blocks and barriers to progress.
  • Personal emotional psychotherapy: Using listening skills and appropriate therapy skills to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling emotional issues and problems.
  • Clinical psychotherapy:  Using only specific psychotherapy skills and methods to address clinical conditions and mental health conditions directly. Stuart is a NCP MNCP (Snr.Accred.) and NACHP registered psychotherapist having trained in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy..
  • Pastoral counselling: Using listening skills and appropriate faith related therapy skills to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling spiritual and faith issues.
  • Couples counselling: Using couples facilitation and group facilitation skills, listening skills, negotiation skills and other methods to enable better communication and understanding.
  • Counselling. there are various styles, but generally counselling is less directive and focused than psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Originating with cognitive psychology this is an experimental approach. Some practitioners are solely qualified in CBT, others such as Stuart and Denise use it as just one tool in an integrative approach.
  • Addictions psychotherapyUsing listening skills and appropriate therapy skills including motivational models to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling addictions and dependencies. A key model is called motivational interviewing.
  • Person Centred psychotherapy: A particular method of very much "listening skills" driven therapy.
  • Humanistic counselling: A method very much focused on achieving balance and progress in areas of life leading to an optimum state of well being.
  • Psychoanalytical psychotherapy: Traditionally psychotherapy with it's roots in Jung and Freud. Driven to tackle deep underlying issues and patterns. Business analysis and NLP analysis models are also common.
  • Transactional Analysis counselling: Related to psychoanalysis it is a modern model of analytical therapy and uses modified patterns and terminology. Very useful in coaching and counselling methods, especially where relationships and interpersonal dynamics are being examined.
  • Primal psychotherapy: Based on Psychodynamic psychotherapy this deals with primal and crucial experiences, often using rich imagery in the therapy process.
  • Philosophical theory: A number of schools of philosophy in both the East and West have contributed a range of models and ideas relating to mental health and how human beings think. Techniques include mindfulness and Morita therapy.
  • Theology: A number of religions in the East and West have contributed methods that can be used in a secular way to assist people. Just as many people enjoy Yoga or Tai Chi in a secular manner, so mindfulness and meditation techniques can assist without any religious belief.
  • Gestalt psychology: A model which is useful in a number of ways and is often used in coaching, NLP, counselling and psychotherapy. Particular useful models include explanations of how past events effect us now. Gestalt has it's roots in Buddhism and eastern philosophy.
  • Ritual and Symbolism: A number of great thinkers such as Jung, Wagner, Freud and Nietzsche have contributed to the debate on how symbolism, art and ritual effect us consciously, spiritually and unconsciously. Various religions in the East and West have also contributed to the debate. These principles can be used in holistic therapy to guide personal medications and self development exercises. Many of these are combined where appropriate in Transpersonal psychology / Transpersonal psychotherapy. This does not mean having to convert to or follow any particular faith or belief. Indeed a strength of Transpersonal therapy is to look at common themes in faith and non-faith societies.

Stuart provides a combined and integrated form of psychotherapy, using CBT, psychoanalysis, humanistic, coaching, Transpersonal and hypnotherapy based methods entirely depending on the needs of the client.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy / Psychotherapy / Life Coaching/ Psychoanalysis in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Falkirk

CBT or CBC is referred to by different therapists as either Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Cognitive Behavioural Training / Coaching. The difference is in the approach and practice style of the therapist. As the name suggests CBT is about:

  • Cognitive: changing perceptions and the way we feel about things
  • Behavioural: changing the way we behave towards things
  • Therapy: The change process (alternatively Coaching in CBC)
  • CBT may be effective in the management of stress related symptoms such as tension headaches (according to BMJ Learning)
  • CBT may be effective in the management and treatment of eating disorders and organically unexplained symptoms and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (according to BMJ Learning)

CBT works best when combined with other methods and styles like life coaching and hypnotherapy. A good CBT practitioner will have comprehensive psychotherapy and counselling skills. A common form of CBT is "Stress Innoculation Therapy" which is a process used to address phobias, fears and feelings of discomfort.

CBT is the primary psychological therapy recommended by NICE for many conditions. It is however best combined with a wider range of therapies to give  a broader and more meaningful therapy response.

Hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, hypnosis in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Falkirk

Hypnotherapy is a well established form of psychotherapy which has nothing to do with stage acts at all. Indeed it has been used in both the mainstream and complementary health professions for well over 100 years. It is recommended by Anxiety UK for anxiety related conditions and is subject to regulation in the UK by the CNHC. Stuart is a CNHC registered hypnotherapist. Stuart is also  a member of the FHT AR scheme. Denise is CNHC registered.
